5333-Wk 1- Introductions
Biography:
Hello, My name is Lorena Rubio and married with a beautiful 9 month old baby girl! I am a certified bilingual educator with EC-6 and in my fifth year of teaching. This is my second year in 1st grade as a Dual Language Teacher in Texas but previously taught Bilingual Kindergarten and Pre-kindergarten. My favorite grade level is first grade! When I first started the Dual language program at my current district, I was intimidated by the fact of teaching Spanish learners versus only teaching Spanish speakers as a bilingual teacher at my previous district. The Dual language program used at my campus is the 2-way, meaning the group of students composed of Spanish speakers and Spanish learners. I am blessed to give back to the bilingual program that helped me achieve to become a bilingual teacher. I am a product of the same district I am currently teaching! Although I am only in my fifth year of teaching, I would like to support teachers digitally and provide them with abundant resources and tricks to where they are not intimidated to incorporate technology and apps daily in their lessons and classroom.
Ideas:
The concept of Digital storytelling created anxiety and felt at a loss with what topic to decide, prior to reading the readings available, because of the countless possibilities. It made me reflect on how my first graders have felt or may feel when they are tasked to create a story of their choosing or based on a topic that may seem out of reach. By providing the variety and complexity of the readings, it gave insight and activated thinking to gear on possible topics to consider. I think this idea of digital storytelling is phenomenal to bring into the classroom, not sure how to adapt it at the moment for my current grade level but there may be a way to divide and conquer.
Readings:
As I read in the Digital Storytelling Cookbook, what resonated with me was providing an opportunity to honor and remember an important and special person that contributed to my upbringing, my sweet abuelita. The most important question, “if you had something to say to the person but they never had a chance to hear you say it, what would it be?” (Lambart 2010). There are many things that I would like to tell her and what better way to do than to create a digital story just for her. By creating my digital story based on a memorial story, I can use it as an example for students to create a memorial story based on a special person or a pet. I can also set clear expectations, refine any misconceptions and provide a rubric for students to follow. Digital Storytelling practices can impact for both students and colleagues positively especially with the evolving of technology and adds another craft to their abilities. As results and success is portrayed, more teachers show an interest to integrate it into their own classroom and I would be able to assist after going through the process of creating my first digital storytelling.

Lorena,
ReplyDeleteI definitely relate to your initial feelings about digital story telling! After reading a few articles, I realized it was not as daunting as I thought it was and it seemed like a fun way to switch up traditional lessons. I love your example of incorporating a digital story about your grandma! I also like that 1st graders would be able to relate to this story by either honoring someone that has passed, either a family member or pet, or simply just honoring someone currently in their lives that means a lot to them. The usage of a rubric would definitely allow for clear expectations and guidance with grading. I could totally see my 5th graders running with an idea like this! I would love to see how you would implement this with 1st graders!
Hey Lorena,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to another semester. I like how passionate both you and Angie are for your subject on EL students. I know that will help make your class and lessons exemplarily especially in the scope of digital story telling. I shared with Angie and idea somewhat similar to what you posed here. Students creating a sort of presentation using tech integration to not only become more verse in tech, but also use their English speaking skills to continue to practice and master the language. Excited to see what else you come up with to refine this project!
