Part 1:  Authentic Intellectual Work/Authentic Instruction & Assessment.

  1. What is the nature of Authentic Intellectual Work?  How does it differ from traditional approaches to instruction and assessment?

The nature of Authentic Intellectual Work goes beyond the traditional approach in instruction and assessment. Authentic Intellectual work are skills that are in depth and transfer to adult life to make decisions and build great communication.

  1. Discuss the components of Authentic Intellectual Work and provide deep consideration of at least one component by including a discussion of empirical (research-based) evidence.

The components of Authentic Intellectual Work are construction of knowledge, discipline inquiry, and value beyond school (Newman, King, & Carmichael 2007). The components go more in depth of what is included. For the construction of knowledge, to be able to solve new problems organization, interpreting, evaluating or synthesizing prior knowledge is involved. Within the discipline inquiry, a base of prior knowledge, understanding of in depth knowledge, and communication that is elaborated and can be demonstrated in different ways.

Finally, the value beyond school refers to challenges that are intellectual and can be applied later in life.

  1. Describe a specific example of authentic intellectual work in a discipline or content area.

One example of authentic intellectual work in Math would be understanding the value of money, identifying the cost of products in a donut shop, and adequately supplying a donut shop with profits. This helps them get an insight on how the economy sort of works and are able to apply the mathematics practices familiar with while also considering a budget.

Part 2:  2017 National Education Technology Plan Update

The 2017 NETP is not explicitly connected to the Authentic Intellectual Work Framework.  What opportunities do you see within the first section “Learning:  Engaging and Empowering Learning Through Technology” to connect technology integration practices with the components of authenticity?  Describe an example in the plan or develop your own example aligned with this technology plan that supports students to engage in authentic intellectual work.

A connection is in the goal itself because the goal is for them to be engaged and empowered through learning experiences that vary in different settings including them to be creative, active, knowledgeable, and ethical within the ever changing society. It also states personalized learning and blending learning which helps students on what needs additional support and where extension needs to be provided to further their learning through technology. An example in the plan included a Technology-Based Program, which assists students to understand the growth mindset that they may not understand now but with practice it will be learned and is engaging because it mimics a video game.

Part 3:  Triple E Framework

What connection do you notice between the AIW framework and Kolb’s Triple Es?  How does the example you developed above support Engagement, Enhancement, or Extension?

A connection between Authentic intellectual work and Kolb's Triple E Framework is that it has a similar structure in how information is presented or taught; however the authentic intellectual work does go beyond and has more criteria to be fulfilled. For example in the example above, the students are not only engaged by the format of the content but students need to bring in background knowledge, skills to advance in the program and how it works and extend to everyday life activities.
