Hi my name is Lorena Rubio. This is my 5th year in education and a 1st grade Dual language teacher. I

have a 1-year-old cutie that keeps my husband and me busy. My current professional goal is to cultivate

and foster the importance of bilingualism for my students. My future professional goal is to create digital

resources or materials for dual language teachers to facilitate the time spent on creating or adjusting the

 current material or curriculum.

Empower learner 1.C asks students to use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their

practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. Students in 1st grade can address the

Spanish Language Arts 1.2C by using different digital platforms like  Flipgrid, Boom Cards, and

Seesaw and interact with and assess the different diphthongs and hiatus.

With Kolb's Triple E Framework, the three E's are targeted with the different formats and complexity of

the content. For the engagement component, I would consider using Flipgrid because it allows the

educator to pose a question or comment in video format and students give feedback by recording their

responses individually and can be creative with the tools. For the enhancement component, I would

consider using Boomcards because it allow prompt feedback to the learning of the concept or skill. For

the extension component, I would consider using Seesaw because it allows us to create and provide

resources such as educational videos that can include real-world events and/or scenarios.

  1. Hi Lorena. I was a first grade teacher for 9 years. This year I became an Interventionist for first and second grade. When teaching in first grade, we used Seesaw a lot!! When Covid happened, Seesaw was our main program we used when having "Virtual Days" or when students were having to quarantine. We found Seesaw was more user friendly for our little first graders than Google Classroom, which is what many of the older students in the district used. We continue to use Seesaw to this day.

    1. Hi Alyssa! First grade has been great! Congratulations on becoming an interventionist and bringing in that knowledge to better support them. Seesaw definitely is very student and teacher-friendly. I also used it during COVID, at the time I was with Kinder students.

  2. Hi Lorena, I am curious what exactly is a dual language coach is. Is it like an ELL teacher? I myself have three teenage boys so trust me when I say soak up all the moments you can with your little one it goes by super quick. I am not familiar with most of the technology programs you mentioned but am going to do some research into them to see what they are all about and if they are something I can incorporate into my classroom for some of my students.

    1. Hi Mellisa! Great question, the dual language program is composed of Spanish-speaking students and Spanish learners and is different from both the ELL program and the Bilingual program. Within the Dual language program, students are taught both Spanish and English depending on the model adopted and by grade level. For example in 1st grade, Reading, Writing, Math, and Social Studies are taught in Spanish while Science and a 30-minute block of English Instruction. They are all great apps to support learning in the Classroom.
